Young Couple Wires $360,000 For New Home, But Is Horrified When Hackers Intercept Transfer
If you or anyone you know are looking to buy a new home anytime soon, it’s important that you see the real estate scam caught recently by an agent in Colorado.
Kaeti Bancroft was helping a young couple purchase a new home in the booming Denver housing area when she noticed nefarious activity.
The couple wanted to purchase the home in cash, laying down $360,000 in payment and closing costs.
And while it seemed like nothing unusual was going on when they asked the bank to wire transfer their money over to the title company, a standard operation in real estate deals, Kaeti soon realized the funds never made it through.
Luckily, she was able to alert the couple and their bank quickly enough that their money wasn’t lost for good, but the fact that both Kaeti and the title company couldn’t see any of the red flags before it was too late was something she knew she needed to warn others about.
Somehow, hackers were able to intercept the email exchange from the title company with the instructions for wiring before it reached the couple and switched out the account numbers.
